Hyderabad restaurant fined Rs 20,000 after customer finds cockroach in biryani

One of Captain Cook’s customers, M Arun, found a cockroach crawling out of the chicken biryani takeaway parcel he received from the restaurant. The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ordered the restaurant to pay Arun Rs 20,000 as compensation. The restaurant was found guilty of failing to maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards following the incident in September 2021.

According to Arun’s complaint, he ordered the chicken biryani takeaway parcel from Captain Cook Restaurant and discovered a cockroach crawling out of the food upon arriving at his workplace.

He claimed that the incident not only made him lose his appetite for days, but also caused him to vomit. Arun contacted the restaurant right away and informed them of the incident, only to receive an apology from the manager, who claimed that pest control had recently taken place in the establishment.

He, however, refused to accept the apology and instead brought the matter before the District forum. The restaurant denied Arun’s allegations during the hearing, claiming that the meal was fresh and hot, making it impossible for an insect to survive at that temperature.

However, the commission found the restaurant owners guilty, citing their failure to maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards. A video shown by Arun also revealed that a cockroach had crawled out of the food.

The commission ordered the restaurant to pay Arun Rs 20,000 in compensation and an additional Rs 10,000 in costs incurred during the hearing. The guilty have been given 45 days to pay the fine. The commission has also highlighted the importance for establishments to maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards while providing food to customers.
