Hyderabad: Security tightened in communally sensitive areas for Ganesh festivities

During the ongoing 10-day Ganesh festival, tight security is maintained at Begum Bazaar, Shahinayathgunj, Mangalhat, Kulsumpura, Afzalgunj, and Habeebnagar police stations.

Large scale gatherings at pandals in communally sensitive areas of Hyderabad’s central and western commercial hubs necessitate closer monitoring of Ganesh festivities.

Additionally, the festival is taking place just days after derogatory remarks were made against Prophet Muhammad by suspended BJP MLA Raja Singh (and detained under the PD Act).

Muslim youth protested Raja Singh’s remarks in Hyderabad’s old city, which led to violence and a heavy police crackdown. Tensions finally subsided after Singh’s arrest later on. Raja Singh’s Goshamahal seat falls under the jurisdiction of the Hyderabad police’s west zone.

For Hyderabad’s economy to prosper, security measures were necessary to keep markets free from sabotage in Mangalhat, the city’s business hub. However, the growth of the Bhartiya Janata Party and its associated saffron organizations has also changed the perspective of law enforcement agencies.

Police fear trouble following the arrest and detention of Goshamahal legislator Raja Singh under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act following his derogatory comments on Prophet Mohammed.

Large-scale violent incidents occurred in Begum Bazaar, Muqtargunj, Shahinayathgunj, Siddiamber Bazar, Gowliguda, Chudi Bazaar, Mangalhat, and their surrounding areas in 2010.

Most of them have been linked to Raja Singh, and he has since become known as a rabid hate-monger.

The police fear the leader’s supporters may attempt to disrupt law and order to bargain for his early release now that he is behind bars. For this reason, the Hyderabad police monitor areas that are dominated by saffron groups round-the-clock to prevent trouble from happening.

All sensitive locations and major junctions have been surrounded by police pickets. The situation is being monitored by senior officers and patrolling is intensified.
