Hyderabad sees a rise in flu, asthma cases during winter

The current chilly weather conditions in Hyderabad and the surrounding areas have begun to cause a large number of winter-related health complications among the general public. While Covid infections have declined significantly in recent months, other winter-related illnesses such as upper respiratory tract infections, seasonal flu, asthma, and allergy infections are on the rise.

Seasonal disease experts have advised people in Hyderabad to brace themselves for a dry and cold winter that will last until February. Covid, seasonal flu, upper respiratory tract infections, allergies, and asthma are among the illnesses to watch out for in the coming months.

Until last winter, Covid positive cases were the most common viral infection. However, cases of seasonal flu and upper respiratory tract infections affecting the nose, as well as swelling of the upper airways with associated cough without fever or pneumonia, are on the rise in children and adults this winter.

High-risk groups, such as pregnant women, children, and the elderly with co-morbid conditions, can receive their annual flu vaccine shot after consulting with a qualified doctor. According to Dr. K Shankar, Superintendent, Fever Hospital, such people should wear masks if they go outside.

Asthma attacks are exacerbated by the cold and dry air of winter. The lining of the airways swells in asthma patients, causing the airways to narrow. Sticky mucus or phlegm buildup also clogs airways, making breathing difficult and forced for asthma patients. The cold air causes airways to tighten further, making breathing even more difficult. Asthma requires long-term treatment due to its chronic nature, and inhalers play a significant role in living a healthy life with asthma.

“Children and adults with asthma problems should adopt inhalation therapy, which is a long-term medication. There are misconceptions that such medications are addictive. Many patients underutilize their medications or use their inhalers incorrectly. The therapy for asthma should not be stopped without consultation,” advises Superintendent, Chest Hospital, Dr Mahabub Khan.

Winter allergies are also common, and there is usually a 40% increase in such cases among individuals. The vast majority of these are the result of allergic reactions to house dust mites and molds. Eczema, a skin condition that causes a dry, itchy, and red rash on the body, flares up in the winter. Houses with closed windows during the winter not only have poor ventilation but also encourage the growth of mold or fungi. Being exposed to cold air after waking up causes allergic reactions as well.
