Rs 134.46 crore sanctioned by Telangana for setting up STPs in 20 govt hospitals

The Telangana government on Friday sanctioned the construction of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in 20 government hospitals as part of establishing biomedical waste management practices.

Recently Telangana government also sanctioned an amount of more than Rs 60 lakh for the renovation of a community hall for the welfare of the poor people in the state.

The Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPSCB) will contribute Rs 52.59 crore to the sanctioned amount for the construction of 20 sewage treatment plants (STPs), according to Government Order (GO Ms. No 73) released by Health Secretary SAM Rizvi on July 5.

STP construction will be handled by Telangana State Medical Services Infrastructure Development Corporation (TSMSIDC) under Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), which includes operation and management for 10 years.

The government has decided to construct 20 STPs across the State in an effort to ensure that all biomedical waste produced by government hospitals is treated in STPs before releasing them. This is a significant move aimed at implementing best biomedical waste management practices in government hospitals,” said Health Minister, T Harish Rao.

Also, there will be a pre-treatment facility for laboratory, operating theatre, and laundry washing, which will be provided by the State Health Department before being pumped into the State Treatment Plant. STPs are also expected to comply with outlet discharge standards under the Biomedical Waste Rules, 2016, and its amendments, according to Health Department officials.

According to the Biomedical Waste Rule, 2016, hospitals that serve more than 1,000 patients per month need to obtain authorization for biomedical waste to be segregated.

Health officials in the city have also urged private hospitals without proper biomedical waste disposal systems to construct STPs.

These are the 20 govt. hospitals: Gandhi Hospital, Osmania General Hospital, Niloufer Hospital, MNJ Cancer Hospital, Medical college in Siddipet, Mahabubnagar, Siddipet, Suryapet, Nalgonda, Sangareddy, Wanaparthy, Mancherial, Mahabubabad, Jagtiyal, Ramagundam, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Nagarkurnool, District Hospitals of Khammam and Karimnagar, RIMS Hospital, Adilabad.
