Hyderabad: Society members ask to maintain decorum while observing Milad-Un-Nabi

On Friday, a group of concerned civil society members asked organizers and participants of Milad-Un-Nabi rallies to “maintain decorum” during public events marking the occasion. Milad is celebrated all over the world to honor Prophet Muhammad. This year, it falls on October 9.

“Hyderabad is witnessing some programs being organized on the occasion of Milad-Un-Nabi like playing of loud music into late hours and unregulated rallies by youth on the streets of Hyderabad. It is witnessed that three to four youth together ride the two-wheelers sitting and also standing, wave long flags, shout slogans and some even remove their silencers to create more noise,” the letter stated from civil society members, all of whom are from the Muslim community in Hyderabad.

They said that over the years, unruly behavior at Milad-Un-Nabi programs has caused “a lot of inconvenience to others through traffic jams and noise pollution.” Activist Kaneez Fatima, social worker Khalida Parveen, Religions For Peace conveyor Mazher Hussain and Mujtaba Hasa Askari from the Helping Hands Foundation are among the signatories.

The concerned members stated that the Milad-Un-Nabi activities “are being undertaken more for personal entertainment and not so much to pay homage to the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad.” Personal entertainment can be planned on any day of the year, but Milad-Un-Nabi “should be saved from such behavior” in order to value and honor the Prophet.

Over the years, Milad-Un-Nabi is marked with bike rallies by Muslim youth, who ride around at night on their motorcycles, causing the Hyderabad police to restrict traffic. The signatories urge rally organizers and participants to ensure that only permitted routes are used and that no traffic rules are broken (including more than 2 persons sitting on a bike and no unruly and provocative slogans should be raised).
