Hyderabad: Stray dog seen carrying newborn’s severed head

In a horrifying incident, a stray dog was spotted carrying the severed head of a new born in its mouth in Vanasthalipuram, here on Sunday.

M.Karthik, an LB Nagar resident who was sitting at a friend’s milk shop opposite the Vivekananda statue on Sahara Road, was shocked to see the dog with the infant’s head. He and some of his friends drove the stray animal away, which had left the head on the ground before running away.

Karthik was scared of seeing the head and called 100 to notify the police, and Vanasthalipuram police arrived at the scene and sent the head for medical examination.

According to ACP K Purushotham Reddy, “It is probable that the infant died during a premature birth and was not properly buried. The stray dog that smelled the infant most likely bit the infant’s head off and carried it around.”

While the practice of discarding still-born or foetuses exists, the ACP says that hospitals are not to blame because they dispose of the dead in accordance with the law.

A case was filed at the Vanasthalipuram police station under Section 318 of the IPC, which makes it a crime to dispose of a body in a discrete manner.

The police are examining CCTV footage in and around the neighbourhood to identify where the stray dog picked up the head. This could shed some light on which hospital disposed of the body and whether or not there was any foul play.

A search for the infant’s torso was initiated, and a case was filed by the police.

The bodies of a female infant and two foetuses were discovered recently in Shameerpet and Uppal. The investigation into these situations is also in progress.
