The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) is set to introduce an additional 286 electric buses in Hyderabad during the first half of this year. The new buses are expected to be operational on various high-demand routes by May, furthering the city’s efforts towards sustainable and eco-friendly public transportation.
Currently, Hyderabad boasts a fleet of 254 electric buses, which maintain an impressive average occupancy rate of 80 percent. The TGSRTC’s ambitious plan aims to expand this number to 2,500 electric buses, gradually phasing out diesel buses to reduce pollution and promote a cleaner environment.
In a significant move, the TGSRTC has announced the establishment of an EV charging station at the Ranigunj depot within the next three months. This facility will support the operation of approximately 100 electric buses from the depot. Additionally, preparations are underway to run another 100 electric buses from the Kukatpally bus depot. The Hayathnagar bus depot, which currently operates 55 electric buses, will soon see the addition of 45 electric Metro Express buses, thanks to a newly prepared route map.

Transport officials highlight the cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits of electric buses. While the operational cost for a diesel bus stands at around Rs 20 per kilometer, an electric bus costs just Rs 8 per kilometer. Moreover, both AC and Non-AC electric buses can cover about 70,000 kilometers, significantly reducing expenses and contributing to a pollution-free city.
The current distribution of electric buses in Hyderabad includes 90 AC buses, 74 City Ordinary buses, and 90 Metro Express buses. This expansion is expected to enhance the city’s public transport system, making it more efficient and environmentally friendly.
As Hyderabad continues to embrace electric mobility, the TGSRTC’s initiatives are set to play a crucial role in transforming the city’s transportation landscape, ensuring a greener and more sustainable future for its residents.
