Hyderabad Traffic Police Launch Major Drive to Clear Obstructions and Improve Road Safety in Tolichowki

In a significant step to tackle traffic congestion and enhance public safety, the Hyderabad Traffic Police conducted a special drive  under the Removal of Obstructive Parking and Encroachments (ROPE) initiative. Led by Commissioner of Police C.V. Anand, the operation focused on addressing illegal parking, roadside vendors, and encroachments that have been obstructing pedestrian movement and traffic flow, particularly on the busy Tolichowki main road.

The drive targeted unauthorized vendors and other encroachments on both footpaths and carriageways along Tolichowki’s main road, a major traffic hub in the city. Traffic police deployed manpower, cranes, and vehicles to clear these obstructions and reclaim public spaces, making the area safer for pedestrians and motorists alike.

In addition to tackling encroachments, the police also took action against the misuse of sirens on four-wheelers, which have long been a safety concern. As part of the crackdown, a month-long campaign led to the seizure of 1,015 sirens and 525 multi-tone horns, all of which were destroyed using a road roller during the drive.

Speaking to the media, Commissioner C.V. Anand emphasized the need for a systematic approach to clear footpaths and carriageways to reduce traffic congestion. He expressed concern over the lack of cooperation from some local politicians in addressing these pressing issues. “Unless the footpaths are cleared and the carriageway is free of obstruction, traffic congestion will not subside,” Anand stated.

The Commissioner also pointed out that many of the roadside vendors who occupy public spaces are not from impoverished backgrounds but often hail from other states. These vendors, he claimed, encroach on public property by paying significant sums to local mafia-like groups. “It is surprising to note that some shopkeepers are leasing the space in front of their shops for a decent sum,” he added.

The traffic police plan to continue special drives under the ROPE initiative across various parts of the city, with a focus on clearing footpaths, recovering road width, and improving traffic flow. With approximately 88 lakh vehicles on Hyderabad’s roads every day, officials stressed that addressing the traffic situation requires a multi-pronged approach and active cooperation from all stakeholders, including citizens, politicians, and various organizations.

The ongoing efforts by the Hyderabad Traffic Police aim to ensure that public spaces are accessible, road safety is maintained, and the city’s traffic challenges are addressed in a comprehensive manner. Similar drives are expected to be carried out in other areas to further tackle the issue of encroachments and improve overall traffic conditions.
