Hyderabad: Water bowls to be placed for stray animals

In the midst of the current heatwave, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to implement a new initiative to quench the thirst of stray animals.

The Corporation is partnering with voluntary organisations that support animal welfare, and placing water bowls for stray animals at various locations in Hyderabad, including Himayathnagar, Amberpet, Begumpet, Secunderabad and Malkajgiri.

Shakuntala Society for Welfare of Animals and Nature, a voluntary organization, has prepared 200 water bowls that will be placed at various locations.

Young children from various age groups collaborated with the Society to prepare the unique water bowls, which will serve to quench the thirst of stray animals this summer.

Measures to protect animals from heat in Nehru Zoo

Summer is in full swing across the State, and officials at the Nehru Zoological Park are putting in place a summer protocol to protect animals from the heat.

Since the temperatures have been rising, arrangements and precautionary measures are being taken to prevent animal sunstrokes. The measures will prevent summer stress and heat strokes among the animals in the months between March and June, according to Zoo Park Curator S Rajashekhar.

The measures include setting up air coolers in the animal enclosures for monkeys, tigers, lions, jaguars and leopards. In addition, there are air conditioners and exhaust fans installed in the nocturnal animal house.

The animals are provided with seasonal fruits like watermelon, muskmelon and citrus fruits to maintain body temperature, especially apes, monkeys, birds, and bears. Furthermore, ample drinking water is provided at the zoo, in addition to water troughs maintained at different places in the zoo for the free-ranging animals and birds.

Supplements such as Glucon-D, electrolyte powder, vitamin C and B-Complex are also provided to ensure that the animals are protected from summer stress.
