Telangana to experience summer rains: IMD

During the summer months, the State may be fortunate enough to get some sudden but light rains following dry and hot temperatures.

Most parts of Telangana will see rainfall until Wednesday, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)-Hyderabad.

It is predicted that the rains will start on Monday with the persistence of a trough stretching from Marathwada to south interior Tamil Nadu across interior Karnataka. IMD-Hyderabad, in response, has issued a yellow alert for 17 districts including Adilabad, Nirmal, Kumaram Bheem, Nizamabad, Medak, Sangareddy, Nalgonda, and Suryapet on Tuesday.

Furthermore, Hyderabad is also likely to see partly cloudy skies with the chance of thunder and lightning.

“It is likely that the city will see partly cloudy skies over the next 48 hours. Thunder clouds are likely to form during the evening/night hours. With wind speeds around 06-10 kmph, surface winds are likely to be south-westerlies. Temperatures are likely to range between 39 and 25 degrees Celsius,” according to IMD-Hyderabad.

Heatwave in Telangana

Telangana has experienced more than 1,000 deaths due to heatwaves in the past eight years. The majority of deaths caused by the heatwave occurred between 2015 and 2017 in Telangana, which is within the Core Heatwave Zone (CHZ). However, the Covid-19-induced lockdown during the heatwave of 2020 played an instrumental role in reducing heat-related deaths.

Telangana has recorded 1,008 deaths due to the heatwave from 2014 to 2020, according to the state’s disaster management department. In 2015, there were 541 deaths, followed by 324 in 2016, and 108 in 2017.

However, the Covid-19-induced lockdown in 2020 helped reduce the number of deaths to nine. Heatwaves occur when the actual maximum temperature exceeds the normal maximum temperature, which is 40 degrees Celsius.

Hyderabad is located in a region where there are less than seven heatwave days per year. In 2015, the city experienced three days of heat, and in 2016, it experienced four days of heat.
