Hyderabad will soon turn into a pharma manufacturing hub, says KTR

With the completion of Pharma City, the largest pharma manufacturing cluster, Hyderabad will soon turn into a pharma manufacturing hub of international importance.

IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao stated that efforts were also underway to double the size of the State’s life sciences sector from $50 billion to $100 billion in five years. In Telangana, there were about four lakh people working in life sciences and allied sectors, which he predicted would double to 8,00,000 in the next five years.

Among other things, the Genome Valley would gain an additional 20 lakh square feet of real estate space. Approximately 30 lakh square feet had already been constructed and were in use.

He stated that the Sultanpur medical devices cluster had received a positive response and that there was almost no vacant space in the cluster.

Speaking to the media ahead of the 20th edition of industry event BioAsia, he said Telangana’s IT and health and life sciences sectors had grown due to the presence of a nurturing ecosystem and a progressive government.

Even though the Centre spoke of cooperative federalism and Team India, its actions did not reflect this. An ITIR project given to the State was cancelled. If it had been permitted, it would have provided more opportunities in the IT sector to Telangana.

Despite the presence of a large supporting ecosystem, the Centre also ignored Telangana’s request for a bulk drugs park. Telangana was home to 214 US FDA facilities, the largest in a single province. New Jersey came in second with 189 USFDA units. Despite having so many US regulator-approved pharma units, the Centre did not grant Telangana a bulk drugs manufacturing park, he said, emphasising the Centre’s selective bias towards other States.

Another request to establish a defence and aerospace cluster between Hyderabad and Bengaluru was also denied. If the Centre had allowed it, a defence manufacturing corridor would have benefited Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. Instead, it chose to publicise this corridor in a location that does not have the manpower and other resources.

“Telangana has continued to grow and will continue to grow further. If the Centre also supported, the growth would happen a bit faster,” the Minister said.

On Pharma City, Rama Rao stated that the State was awaiting court orders on certain issues. So far, no company has been assigned land in the project, according to Rama Rao.

“The State Government has plans to develop a skyway from JBS to Shamirpet. However, this is not allowed to happen as there is no inclination to part with some defence lands. About 100 acre is required for a road on the lines of PVNR Expressway on this stretch,” he said.

Regarding the industry event, he stated that BioAsia was a one-of-a-kind event focused on a niche sector. It has hosted thought leaders from over 100 countries in the previous 19 editions.

The event promotes Hyderabad, Telangana, and India as a destination for investment in the pharma, health, and life sciences sectors. The event also reflects Telangana’s capabilities. The event, which has helped the state secure investments worth Rs 25,000 crore in previous editions, will be held in Hyderabad from February 24 to 26.
