Hyderabad Witnesses Surge in Drunk Driving Cases During New Year’s Eve

During the New Year’s Eve celebrations, there was an increase in drunk driving instances in Hyderabad, with over 2,700 cases reported under the jurisdiction of the Hyderabad and Cyberabad police commissionerates. The police performed a special drive that included setting up checkpoints and administering breath analyzer tests.

The Hyderabad commissionerate recorded over 1,500 cases, while the Cyberabad commissionerate recorded over 1,200. The police have taken strict efforts to reduce drunk driving, with breath analyzer tests being done since 8 p.m.

According to Cyberabad Police, a total of 1,241 people, including two women, were arrested for drunk driving. There were 938 two-wheelers and 275 four-wheelers involved in the cases. According to the data, a large percentage of individuals apprehended were between the ages of 18 and 25, 26 to 36, and 35 to 45.

Among those apprehended, 196 had Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels above 50, above the legal alcohol limit. Breath Analyzer testing revealed violations, with 485 people having BACs ranging from 51 to 99, 281 having BACs ranging from 100 to 149, and so on.
Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act classifies drunk driving as a serious offense. The penalty is a Rs 10,000 fine and/or imprisonment for up to six months. Furthermore, driving privileges may be suspended for three months or more, and in rare situations, permanently.

During the New Year celebrations, several police stations in Cyberabad, notably Miyapur and Kukatpally, recorded a significant number of drunk driving charges. The crackdown on drunk driving is part of an effort to improve road safety and avoid accidents caused by drunk driving.
