In 2023, air pollution is expected to have killed 8,000 people and cost the city Rs 100 crore in economic damages. ‘Greenpeace Southeast Asia’ discovered this information through a study of IQAir data. The city now has “unhealthy” air quality for sensitive populations, with Kokapet, Nacharam, and Malakpet facing the worst levels of pollution.
Air pollution has a considerable influence on public health, particularly during the winter months. According to municipal pulmonologists, air pollution has increased the number of patients with respiratory difficulties, particularly among youngsters.
In Hyderabad, the Nehru Zoo Park and Kokapet neighborhoods have the highest Air Quality Index (AQI) readings, signifying poor air quality. According to the AQI statistics, pollution levels are peak in the evening about 6 p.m.
With a population of over 10 million people, Hyderabad performs badly in terms of overall air quality when compared to other districts in Telangana. However, the AQI has improved since earlier in the year, with several regions of the city exceeding the 200 threshold in January 2023. Nonetheless, the quantity of PM2.5 particles in the air is still 7.2 times more than the World Health Organization’s annual air quality guideline value.

Wearing masks, avoiding busy locations, and reducing contact with outdoor pollutants are all ways to protect yourself from the impacts of air pollution, especially for the elderly. Air pollution has an impact on both cognitive capacity and reproductive health. Transportation, building sites, and gaseous emissions from sewage are major causes of air pollution in the city.
It’s important to highlight that indoor air can be more contaminated than outdoor air, with many causes contributing to the problem. Air purifiers can be useful in locations with significant levels of air pollution, such as around construction sites, but their usefulness may be restricted in less polluted areas.
