If the LMA continues to cause inconvenience, KTR threatens to cut off water and power to the defence areas

Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao warned the Central Government in a clear and loud message that power and water supply would be cut to defence areas in Cantonment limits in the city if the Local Military Authority (LMA) continued to cause inconvenience to residents by blocking roads and opposing development works.

During question hour in the Assembly on Saturday, the Minister stated that instructions would be made to the Special Chief Secretary to attend a meeting, discuss such matters with the LMA, and initiate punitive steps if they do not change their methods.

LMA was causing a lot of difficulty to residents in Secunderabad Cantonment limits by obstructing roadways. In addition to these issues, check-dams were built, blocking the flow of water in the nalas.

He said that the defence officials had built a check dam near Langar Houz, where the Balkapur Nala runs into the Hussainsagar, and that this construction was endangering Shahtham Tank.

A few works were planned to maintain the free flow of water from Shahtham tank near Golconda Fort downstream, but the Archeological Survey of India denied clearance, claiming various reasons, he added.

The Minister recalled that even after 18 months, not a single paisa had been granted as compensation for the city’s flooding in October 2020. A team of Central Government officials and elected public representatives had visited the city and surveyed several flood-affected districts, but no announcement had been made, he added.

The Centre does not provide financial help, and obstacles have been erected in the execution of many development projects. He claimed that Telangana was being discriminated against and treated as if it were not a part of India.

Considering all of these concerns and the challenges that locals are experiencing as a result of the LMA’s actions, he stated that the State Government would be compelled to take appropriate measures, adding that “power and water supplies would be disconnected to defence zones in Cantonment limits in the city.”

When TRS MLA K Venkatesh inquired about the Centre’s contribution to the city’s Strategic Nala Development Programme, the Minister stated that there was none.

When financial help from the Central Government was requested for the execution of SNDP phase II works, the State Government was instructed to incorporate the works within Amrut phase II works, according to the Minister.

Amrut funding was granted to cities with a population of one lakh, whereas Hyderabad has a population of nearly one crore. Furthermore, he stated that the funds allotted under this programme would be insufficient to carry out the required tasks.
