The historic Osmania University (OU) College of Arts and Social Sciences, popularly known as Arts College, has played an important part in the history and culture of Telangana. A stunning light and music performance is being organised on the Arts College façade to highlight its rich legacy and the university’s commitment to academics and the Telangana Statehood struggle.
The show will be presented in three sections, beginning in the first week of July. The first section will cover the university’s history from its inception in 1918 till 1948, when Hyderabad State was absorbed into India. The second section will focus on the state’s merger with Andhra Pradesh and subsequent Telangana Statehood agitations, particularly the 1969 Telangana agitation. The final section will detail the events leading up to Telangana’s creation in 2014, as well as the State’s culture and tradition.
The show’s screenplay and voiceover are being developed by OU officials, and it is being organised as part of the Ministry of Culture’s dynamic lighting programme. The performance will take place on Sunday evenings, with seating reserved for two 30-minute shows. The three-year programme has cost the university Rs 13 crore, which includes the installation of a lighting and sound system.
The water fountain in front of the Arts College building will be changed into a melodic fountain, adding to the whole experience. This programme intends to educate people about the history of Osmania University as well as major milestones in Telangana’s journey, while simultaneously appreciating its culture.
