“India is a jihadist nation; dictatorship is solution”- Kangana Ranaut’s post triggers police complaint

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut continues to be at the tip of controversies after making another social media post. This time, her comments triggered a police complaint from the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) who called her post “seditious”.

The incident took place following an Instagram story of the actress amid her string of stories. She actively posts on the social media platform after getting banned from Twitter. The post came in response to the repeal of the farm laws after a year of protests at the Delhi-Haryana border. Kangana shared a person’s tweet in her story and called it “shameful”. Further addressing the protesting farmers as “people on the street”, she said that India has become a “Jihadist nation”.

On the eve of Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s birthday, the actress urged for a “dictatorship” form of government in the country. “When the conscience of the nation is in deep sleep, lath (the cane) is the only solution and dictatorship is the only resolution… Happy birthday Madam Prime Minister,” she wrote.

IYC’s national secretary Amreesh Ranjan Pandey and Ambuj Dixit, co-coordinator of the body’s legal cell, lodged the complaint against Kangana at the Parliament Street police station in the national capital.

Charges including under IPC sections 505 (statements conducing to public mischief), 124A (sedition) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) have been filed against Kangana, Mr Pandey said. The complaint stressed on the followers she has and the impact her words can have. “Kangana Ranaut is a renowned actress and has a huge fan following of more than 7.8 million (78 lakh) people on Instagram. Therefore, her intentional, irresponsible and seditious posts have the ability to excite hatred, contempt and disaffection towards the republic of India,” the complaint read.

Several people are coming forward to voice against the actress and her strong debatable statements. The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa slammed Kangana after she allegedly passed derogatory comments against the Sikhs. Urging the government to take action against her, Mr Sirsa tweeted saying, “She should either be put in a mental hospital or in jail. We demand strict action from the government for her hateful content on Instagram.”

The absurd remarks came soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the withdrawal of the three contentious farm laws following a year-long protest. “Sad, shameful, absolutely unfair. If people on the streets have started to make laws and not the chosen government in the Parliament, then even this is a jihadi nation. Congratulations to all who wanted it like this,” her Instagram story read.
