Indian wrestlers train at Jantar Mantar amidst protests against WFI chief

Prominent Indian wrestlers such as Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat have converted the Jantar Mantar into a training facility in the midst of protests against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The wrestlers were spotted conducting wrestling exercises on the fourth day of the protest, with Vinesh exercising with Sangita Phogat and Sakshi being assisted by her husband, Satyawart Kadian. Before undertaking some stretching exercises, Bajrang was aided by a doctor. Despite the lack of sleep, the wrestlers affirmed their love for the sport and their devotion to the protest.

Bajrang declared that they would not leave until justice was served and that they were prepared to face punishment if they were incorrect. Wrestling was important to them, and they wanted to keep themselves emotionally and physically fit by practicing in Jantar Mantar. A coach criticised the fact that the wrestlers should be practicing at the stadium because important competitions were coming up in a few months. He urged the government to act immediately and assist the wrestlers.

The Delhi Police informed the Supreme Court on Wednesday that some preliminary inquiry may be necessary before a FIR can be lodged in connection with the wrestlers’ complaint alleging sexual harassment by Brij Bhushan. Before the bench, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated that the authorities feel a probe should be done. According to the Chief Justice, the court will not intervene unless there is substance. The panel requested Mehta to turn over the materials by Friday, citing the fact that the case concerned a minor.

On April 25, the wrestlers filed a petition with the court, claiming that women athletes were victims of sexual harassment and were compelled to go from pillar to post in order to seek justice. According to the plea, the accused, a powerful individual, was manipulating the court system to evade and obstruct justice. On April 28, 2023, the Supreme Court issued a notice to reconsider the matter. To protect the complainants, the bench directed that the sealed complaints be resealed and filed with the petition under Article 32 on the next day of listing.
