Inflows from catchment keep officials on their toes at Lakes

While the monsoon showers keep on playing havoc in catchment areas, the torrential inflows keep on marking into Osman Sagar and the Himayat Sagar Lakes with a flux keeping the officials of HMWSSB busy all the time in pulling the crest gates up and down as and when the inrush is  swelling in both the reservoirs.

After keeping almost 21 gates of both the reservoirs opened on Wednesday following heavy inrush into the Lakes, the officials shut most of the gates on Thursday morning as no further inflows were recorded. Out of 13 gates of Osman Sagar Lake, which were opened two days ago, the authorities have shut three of them on Thursday morning following depletion in the inflows. Similarly, 7 out of 8 gates of Himayat Sagar too were closed this morning as no further inrush was recorded since Wednesday night.

The quantum of inflows in Osman Sagar Lake, which went up to 8,000 cusecs on Tuesday, has dropped down to 2500 cusecs on Thursday morning that help the authorities to pull down three out of 13 gates down of the reservoir. Presently, 10 gates remained opened here upto a six feet height from where the excess water is being released into Musi River.

Likewise, the inflows into Himayath Sagar too have dropped down significantly since Wednesday night. As against the 5000 cusecs of inflows being recorded on Tuesday, the reservoir is presently receiving only 400 cusecs of inrush from catchment areas that help the authorities here to close all the 7 out of 8 gates. Only one gate remains opened here up to a feet height.

Earlier, a total number of 21 crest gates of both the reservoirs were opened to release the pressure over the Lakes on Wednesday following heavy inrush into the Lakles. This has prompted the HMWSSB officials to lift 13 out of total 15 gates up to six feet height and 8 out of total 17 gates of Himayat Sagar up to four feet height to feed the Musi River.

Meanwhile, the copious rains in catchment areas and subsequent inflows resulted in swelling of water level in both the reservoirs. According to official statistics released on Thursday morning, the present water level in Osman Sagar Lake stood at 1787.50 feet (3.329 TMC) as against the full tank level of 1790.00 feet (3.900 TMC) in the Lake.

Similarly, the Himayat Sagar Lake too reached its capacity. Here, the present water level reached to the mark of 1760.0 feet (2.362 TMC) as against the full tank level of 1763.50 feet (2.970 TMC).
