Jagadish Reddy: For the last eight years, water released to NSP has left canal for all crop seasons

Several monsoon crops were planted early this year through the left canal of the Nagarjuna Sagar Project (NSP) due to high inflows. Water has been formally released to the NSP left canal by Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy on Thursday.

A schedule for water release has already been released by the project engineers for providing irrigation facilities to 6.16 lakh acres of NSP. As part of the Lift Irrigation Scheme, 1,45,727 acres of land in Nalgonda, 1,45,727 acres in Suryapet, and 2.41 lakh acres in Khammam districts including ayacut will receive irrigation.

On the same day last year, 540.5 feet of water were accumulated by the project by July 28, whereas 550.9 feet had been accumulated by July 28 via steady inflows into the project. Due to heavy water inflows, authorities flooded the left canal early in July, which is earlier than ten years ago when water was released for monsoon crop season. As per the project engineers, this was the second time in two decades that water has been released in July.

Jagadish Reddy also said that it was the 15th time the left canal of NSP had been irrigated since Telangana was formed in 2000, meaning that two crops had been irrigated since then. It was the first time in 59 years of the project’s history that water was released continuously for 15 crop seasons. In this project, early water release to the left canal was possible due to adequate water levels. The farmers of Ayacut would therefore benefit from this early release of water. Telangana would remain separate if a separate state was formed, and it was the best answer to those who questioned this.

It is also worth noting that the Congress and BJP leaders never raised the issue of denying Telangana the share of water that it deserves from the Krishna river in united Andhra Pradesh. As a result of his initiatives, the Chief Minister has brought agricultural glory back to the sector. Besides irrigation facilities, the state government has implemented an investment support program Rythu Bandhu. After releasing the water to the left canal, the minister performed pooja to Krishna River at Pottichelma. There were also MLAs Nomula Bhagath Kumar and Shanampudi Saidi Reddy in attendance, as well as MLC M Koti Reddy.
