Joe Biden and Boris Johnson Sign New Atlantic Charter For Deeper Cooperation between US and UK

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and US President Joe Biden recently signed a new Atlantic Charter. The new charter is aimed at working together towards the global challenges during their first-ever-in-person meeting.

UK and US Prime Minister Pledge to Deepen Cooperation 

As per the latest reports, the meeting took place in the seaside resort of the Carbis Bay, Cornwall on Thursday evening of the G7 Leaders Summit. This is Biden’s first foreign trip after coming to power in January.

In a statement released, the two leaders have pledged to deepen cooperation through the new Atlantic Charter. It echoes the original one signed by the then British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the then US President Franklin Roosevelt in 1941.

The new Charter outlines the modern day threats that affect the two nations. It includes illicit finance, violent conflict and extremism along with climate change and the global health crisis like the Covid 19 pandemic.

Sources suggest that both the Prime Ministers have agreed to work to reopen the travel and to continue to share information that will assist them in defeating the spread of Covid 19.

During the meeting, Biden and Johnson tried to smooth their differences regarding the Northern Ireland issue. However, a definitive solution is yet to be arrived upon.

As per the Downing Street statement, the leaders have agreed that both the European Union and the United Kingdom had a responsibility to work together and to find a pragmatic solution for trade.

Johnson Garlands Biden With Praises 

Talking to the media, UK PM Boris Johnson described Biden as the “breath of fresh air’ and said that he was “optimistic”. Given these qualities, Johnson that peace process would keep on going and there is a common ground for the issues.

He said in a statement that it is important that both the parties affirm their relationship and the talks between the two were great. He said that talks went on for a long time and covered a huge range of subjects.
