Karnataka Deputy CM Urges Tamil Nadu’s Cooperation for Mekedatu Project Implementation

Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar made an appeal to the Tamil Nadu government, urging them to show cooperation and support the implementation of the Mekedatu project for the benefit of farmers from both states.

Shivakumar emphasized that it is unnecessary for both states to continue approaching courts and that the project poses no harm. He called for a larger perspective and cooperation, highlighting that the Mekedatu project is aimed at providing drinking water and will benefit farmers in both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Shivakumar emphasized that the Mekedatu project’s implementation would not have a negative impact on Tamil Nadu. The finances for the project have not been used, despite the government allocating Rs 1,000 crore for it. He emphasised that there are no plans to fight or enmity towards Tamil Nadu because they are considered to be brothers. According to Shivakumar, the project’s goal is to use water resources from the Cauvery River for the benefit of those who live near its banks without reducing Tamil Nadu’s water share.

Responding to Shivakumar’s statement about the construction of the Mekedatu dam, Tamil Nadu’s water resources minister Durai Murugan expressed strong opposition, stating that the Tamil Nadu government will oppose the dam proposal at all levels.
