Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder: Accused Posed as Police Officer, Said ‘Hang Me’ After Arrest”

In a shocking incident that has triggered nationwide outrage, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, has been arrested for the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The gruesome crime has raised serious concerns about the security of medical professionals and the unchecked access of non-hospital staff to sensitive areas within the hospital.

Despite not being an employee of the hospital, Roy was frequently seen on the premises. He worked as a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, a role involving various duties, including traffic management and disaster response. These volunteers, who earn around ₹12,000 per month, do not enjoy the benefits available to regular police personnel. Roy initially joined Kolkata Police’s disaster management group as a volunteer in 2019 but was later transferred to the police welfare cell. Eventually, he was posted at the police outpost within RG Kar Medical College, where he gained access to multiple departments.

According to reports, Roy was allegedly involved in a racket at the state-run hospital that extorted money from patients’ relatives in exchange for ensuring admission or securing beds at nearby nursing homes. Posing as a regular Kolkata Police officer, he used his contacts to stay at the police barracks and even roamed the hospital grounds in a t-shirt bearing the “KP” (Kolkata Police) insignia. His bike also displayed a KP tag, further misleading others about his true status.

Roy was arrested after CCTV footage captured him entering the emergency building at around 4 a.m. on Friday, just hours before the doctor’s body was discovered in the same location. A significant piece of evidence was a Bluetooth headset found near the victim’s body. The CCTV footage showed Roy wearing the headset as he entered the building, but it was missing when he exited. The headset found at the crime scene was later paired with his mobile phone, further implicating him.

Sources revealed that Roy confessed to the crime during police interrogation, displaying a disturbing lack of remorse. He reportedly told the police, “Hang me if you want.” His mobile phone was also found to contain pornographic material.

After committing the heinous crime, Roy reportedly returned home and washed his clothes in an attempt to destroy evidence. However, police were able to recover bloodstains on his shoes. Roy has been remanded in police custody until August 23 as the investigation continues.

The horrifying rape and murder of the doctor while on duty have sparked protests across the country, with medical professionals and the public alike demanding justice. Amid the growing agitation, the principal of RG Kar Medical College has resigned, and questions are being raised about the safety of doctors and the lax security measures that allowed unrestricted access to the hospital premises at all hours.

The incident has once again highlighted the need for stringent security protocols in hospitals, especially for those who work tirelessly to save lives. As the investigation progresses, the nation watches closely, demanding swift justice for the young doctor whose life was tragically cut short.
