Protests have erupted in several state-run medical colleges and hospitals across West Bengal in response to the alleged rape and murder of a junior woman doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with demands for justice and enhanced security on hospital premises.
Junior doctors, along with resident doctors, house staff, interns, and post-graduate trainee doctors, have initiated a ‘cease work’ protest at major medical institutions, including Calcutta Medical College, NRS Medical College, National Medical College, and Sagar Dutta Medical College in Kolkata. While only emergency and in-patient departments remain functional, the protests have significantly disrupted other medical services.
At R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, junior doctors staged a sit-in at the main gate, chanting slogans like “No Safety, No Duty.” They are demanding justice for the victim, calling for a judicial probe into the incident, and insisting on improved safety measures within hospital premises.

“We demand justice for the victim and a judicial probe into the incident. The administration must ensure our safety. There are no CCTVs where the incident occurred, and many existing ones are non-functional. We also lack proper on-duty restrooms,” said one of the protesting junior doctors, who chose to remain anonymous.
The protesting doctors emphasized that their movement is not politically motivated. When members of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) attempted to join the protest, the doctors chanted “Go Back” to maintain the non-political nature of their demands.
One of the junior doctors stressed the need for swift action, stating, “We want a transparent investigation and the arrest of the culprit within 48 hours. A fast-track court should be established, and the culprit should face the death penalty.”
The protesters are also urging the college authorities to keep student representatives informed about the details of the case. They demand the installation of CCTVs in necessary departments, 24×7 security coverage, and the deployment of proper security personnel in all hostels to prevent such incidents in the future.
