KTR says there is no guarantee Hyderabad will not flood this year

KT Rama Rao (KTR), Telangana’s Minister of Municipal Administration and Urban Development, on Friday said that the city of Hyderabad cannot be guaranteed that it will not flood during the upcoming monsoon season. We hope that we will not have the same problems as last year or the year before. I cannot, however, guarantee that there will be no flooding this year since flooding is a continuous process, he said.

He said this during the launch of the annual performance report for 2021-22 produced by the MA&UD Department, where he also expressed hope that the hardships people suffered due to massive flooding will lessen as a result of the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP).

MA&UD, the government’s department in charge of transportation and urban development (MA&UD), has released its annual report for the fifth year in a row highlighting its accomplishments ranging from expanding roads to improving waste management throughout Telangana.

KTR noted that Hyderabad is the only city in the country in which roads were built during the COVID-19 pandemic. He credited the hardworking engineers from Hyderabad Road Development Corporation Limited (HRDCL) and Strategic Road Development Project (SRDP) engineers, who built roads even during the pandemic. MA&UD plans to implement programmes like the CRMP and HRDCL, build an elevated bus rapid transit system, install LED lights across the 159 km of the Outer Ring Road (ORR), and widen over 2,000 km of roads from double lanes to four lanes.

According to KTR, 14 bridges have been approved over the Musi river, which will cost a total of Rs 545 crores. KTR further explained that through Pattana Pragathi, a total of Rs 3700 crores has been distributed to 141 other localities in Telangana besides Hyderabad, on a monthly basis. We are not just giving out grants to municipalities, but we are assuring that every rupee that is disbursed is spent in a judicious way towards programs which will improve the lives of people, he stated.

In 141 municipalities across the state, the ten-point agenda includes the establishment of veg and non-veg markets, crematoriums, drinking water for every household, digital door numbers for every town, and biomining in every dump yard. He hopes to accomplish the ten-point agenda by 2023 when the state’s annual performance report is released.

According to KTR, another post, ‘Additional Collector local body’, is being created exclusively for the implementation of programs like ‘Palle Pragathi’ and ‘Pattana Pragathi’ and the bureaucracy will be geared for their efficient implementation.
