Law Commission of India Seeks Public Input on Uniform Civil Code

The Law Commission of India issued a public notice on June 14 requesting the general public and recognised religious organisations to express their thoughts and ideas on the Uniform Civil Code. Following prior inspections by the 21st Law Commission, the 22nd Law Commission of India resolved to re-examine the case.

Individuals and stakeholders who are interested in participating are invited to do so within 30 days of receiving the notice. Submissions can be made through the Law Commission’s official website or by email. Stakeholders may also send comment, discussion, or working papers to the Law Commission’s New Delhi address. If necessary, the Commission is willing to hold personal hearings or talks.

Voluntary organisations and social activists stress the necessity of public participation in the development of the Uniform Civil Code. They are specifically pushing individuals, particularly the Muslim community, to actively share their perspectives on this topic. They are also inviting relatives and friends to join by spreading the word about the campaign on social media and other venues. A comprehensive knowledge and relevant solutions are considered as requiring inclusive and diverse perspectives.

The submission deadline is 30 days from the date of the announcement, which is June 14, 2023. The Law Commission of India is eagerly awaiting relevant public feedback to inform its discussions on the Uniform Civil Code.
