On February 23, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao will dedicate the Mallanna Sagar Project, built as part of the mega Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) fourth link, to the people, putting an end to decades of struggle for farmers in the erstwhile Medak district and parts of neighbouring districts.
The project, which has a 50 TMCft storage capacity, was constructed between Thoguta and Kondapak Mandals in a hilly terrain for Rs 6.805 crores. The Mallanna Sagar water will be used for Telangana’s industrial needs in addition to providing the drinking water needs of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
While 30 TMCft of the project’s water will be used to meet Hyderabad’s drinking water needs, more than 16 TMCft will be released for industrial usage. While the largest project in KLIS will provide irrigation water to 8.33 lakh acres of new ayacut under KLIS Packages 12 to 19, Mallanna Sagar will also stabilise ayacut under existing irrigation projects like Singur, Nizam Sagar, and Sriram Sagar phase-1, bringing the total ayacut under the project to 15.71 lakh acres.

Water will be discharged into the Konda Pochamma Sagar, Gandhamalla, Basavapur, and Singur projects as part of the fourth link of the KLIS, as well as to meet the irrigation requirements of the Dubbak constituency and Mission Bhagiratha. Link 4 of KLIS has been finished with the end of the project. Mallanna Sagar features a 22.6-kilometre-long bund with five sluice canals. The fourth would provide water to Kondapochamma-Gandhamalla-Basvapur-Singur, while the fifth will release 2,000 cusecs of water per day for Mission Bagiaratha.
Following the protocols of the Central Water Commission (CWC), the project is being tested by loading up to 10 TMCft of water since last August when it was completed. The project now contains 10TMCft of water at 532 meters depth, which is its dead storage. For the project, the government has purchased 17,871 acres of land. The project has a depth of 557 meters and is created in a globe shape over 600 meters above sea level. The project can provide around 40 TMCft of water. T Harish Rao, who was Irrigation Minister at the time the project was launched, played a critical role in its completion by assisting official machinery and guiding engineering authorities in expediting the work.
TRS District President and Medak MP Kotha Prabhakar Reddy said the project will be inaugurated with a large public gathering at Mallanna Sagar in Thoguta. After dedicating the project to the people of Telangana, the Chief Minister will address the public.
