Maruti Suzuki’s newly launched Dzire model has raised the safety bar in the Indian automobile market, securing an impressive five-star Global NCAP rating for adult occupant safety and a four-star rating for child occupant safety. This achievement marks the first time a Maruti Suzuki vehicle has received a five-star rating from the Global New Car Assessment Program (Global NCAP), setting a significant milestone for the Indian automaker.
Launched earlier this week, the new Dzire comes equipped with six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and pedestrian protection as standard features. According to Global NCAP, these safety additions contributed to the vehicle’s high rating. The new Dzire is also fitted with three-point seat belts in all seating positions and i-Size anchorages to improve child seat installation. The vehicle’s structure and footwell area were rated as stable, capable of withstanding further loadings.
The car’s high rating is a testament to Maruti Suzuki’s focus on occupant protection, with Global NCAP’s crash test protocols examining both frontal and side impact protection. For vehicles that achieve top star ratings, the organization’s protocols require pedestrian protection and side pole impact protection assessments. In these rigorous tests, the new Dzire demonstrated full head protection in the pole test and provided robust side impact protection for adult occupants.

David Ward, Executive President of the Towards Zero Foundation, commended Maruti Suzuki’s efforts, describing the five-star rating as a “significant safety benchmark.” Ward added, “The new Dzire’s five-star rating sets a significant safety benchmark for Maruti Suzuki compared to the previous version of this model and others from Maruti we have tested. Global NCAP warmly welcomes this milestone voluntary test result. We are optimistic that going forward Maruti will seek to achieve this high level of safety performance across their model range. If they do, it will be a vehicle safety game changer for Indian consumers.”
The safety performance of the new Dzire also highlighted Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to child occupant safety. For the 18-month-old dummy used in the testing, the vehicle demonstrated full protection. The three-year-old dummy showed good protection for the head and chest, though the report noted that neck protection could be further improved by using a rearward-facing child restraint system (CRS). Side impact testing showed full protection for child occupants, reinforcing the model’s solid safety features for young passengers.
This latest development signals a shift in Maruti Suzuki’s approach to vehicle safety, aligning with global standards and potentially influencing other automakers in India to follow suit. By voluntarily submitting the new Dzire for Global NCAP testing, Maruti Suzuki has paved the way for a heightened focus on consumer safety in a market that has traditionally prioritized affordability and fuel efficiency.
The Dzire’s five-star rating not only represents a game-changer for Maruti Suzuki but could also impact safety benchmarks across the Indian automotive industry, setting a new standard that is bound to resonate with safety-conscious consumers across the country.
