Mental Health Crisis To Be The Next Pandemic

A recent study by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health suggests that after the Covid 19 pandemic, mental health crisis will be the pandemic waiting for the world.

Global Economic Costs For Mental Health Rises Trillion US Dollars

The study suggests that people’s mental health has been attacked for multiple reasons. The global economic costs for mental health concerns have rises to a trillion US dollars a year. Amongst those, 85 percent of the people suffering from mental health disorders did not receive the required treatment especially the ones who belong to poor and middle-income families. The authors of the study said that it would cause an “unprecedented global crisis”.

Further explaining the study, the authors said that the pandemic has not only affected the physical health of the people but also their goals, role at work, economic stability, and their family dynamics.

Along with this other factors like domestic violence, loneliness, the grief of losing family or friends, post-traumatic stress, professional burnout, modification of family roles and generalized anxiety has also contributed to the declining mental health of the people.
Covid Affects Nervous System Of The Patients

The study also showed that 30 to 60 percent of the covid patients had their central and peripheral nervous system affected by the pandemic which further leads to various issues.

A neuropsychiatric syndrome called Delirium is the most found syndrome amongst covid patients. It is further followed by depression and anxiety. But depression and fatigue have a much more long-lasting impact on the people affected by it.

The Barcelona Institute for Global Health has urged for social protection to combat the mental health crisis emerging from unemployment, sudden loss of loved ones, isolation and various other factors. They have urged the need for basic and financial services to help the families in need.
