Mission Bhagiratha hijacked by the Center

K Chandrashekhar Rao conceived and effectively implemented Mission Bhagiratha, a unique piped water supply scheme across Telangana, with no hesitation on the part of the BJP government at the Center.

According to a tweet sent out by the Jal Shakthi Ministry on Saturday, 54 lakh tap water connections have been provided to Telangana under the Jal Jeevan Mission, bringing hope and prosperity to citizens of the State without having contributed a cent!

The BJP government is desperate to bring the TRS government into disrepute, especially since Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the state government’s flagship program in August 2016, when he also praised Chandrashekhar Rao.

Modi had then said that whenever the State government met him, he always discussed Telangana’s development and water problems. After congratulating the government on the launch of Mission Bhagiratha, Modi said he was impressed with the steps it had taken to fulfil the aspirations of the people.

As ironic as this claim is, it is completely incongruous that the Centre ignored Niti Aayog’s recommendations that the Telangana government be sanctioned Rs 19,000 crore for a drinking water project of a scale that had never been attempted before.

When Chandrashekhar Rao was a legislator in the 1990s, he implemented a small-scale pilot project in Siddipet called Mission Bhagiratha. This is the macro version. In Siddipet, Chandrashekhar Rao’s Siddipet constituency, 180 villages were supplied with piped water under the Siddipet drinking water project worth Rs 60 crore.

The State of MAUD Minister K T Rama Rao and Finance Minister T Harish Rao responded quickly to the union government’s Saturday tweet and slammed it for blatantly seeking credit for State-run schemes.

Telangana’s flagship project, Mission Bhagiratha, has been shamelessly misappropriated and made into an Indian project by the Indian government. Niti Ayog recommends Telangana’s Mission Bhagratha should receive Rs.19,000 crore, yet not a single penny is given in support, but now the federal government has infringement on IP rights.

According to Harish Tao, who expressed his objection to the Central government’s false claims, the Telangana government did all the work while the Central government is taking credit and promoting the work. After Niti Aayog recommended that Rs.19,000 crore be sanctioned for Mission Bhagiratha, the Central Government claims credit for not approving the recommendation.

Further, he stated, “With no assistance given to the Telangana Government’s programs, the Central Government is claiming credit for initiatives of the State Government at an unprecedented level.”
