Monsoon action plan prepared by GHMC to combat rain-related disasters

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has proactively developed a comprehensive plan to address potential emergencies as the monsoon season approaches. The goal is to reduce the impact of heavy rains by effectively managing water drainage in low-lying areas while also ensuring residents’ safety.

The municipal corporation has taken measures to protect buildings from water ingress, particularly in basement areas, after identifying areas prone to waterlogging and potential flooding. Dedicated teams are also being assembled to provide assistance and protection to residents living in slum areas during heavy rains.

GHMC officials have instructed the cleaning and maintenance of sewerage lines, strong water drains, and roads ahead of the monsoon season to ensure effective drainage and prevent waterlogging.

GHMC Commissioner Lokesh Kumar has urged assistant engineers and deputy engineers to complete road construction and repair projects before the rains arrive.

Notices have been issued to owners of old and dilapidated buildings to emphasize the importance of timely demolition or repair to avoid any potential risks during the rainy season. Special consideration has also been given to implementing effective drainage systems in cellar construction.

In addition to the GHMC’s existing Disaster Response Force teams, separate special teams for monsoon-related emergencies are being formed. These teams will work alongside the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s allocated budget of Rs 36.9 crore for the Monsoon Action Plan.

There has already been significant progress, with 14 road construction projects completed in Hyderabad, contributing to overall preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season.

Officials said the GHMC remains committed to ensuring citizens’ well-being and minimizing the impact of heavy rainfall by proactively addressing potential challenges and implementing necessary measures to protect lives and property.
