There have been endless protests and communal tensions both in the old and new parts of Hyderabad since Munawar Faruqui’s stand-up comedy show here on August 20. Moreover, the city residents have been worried about Munawar Faruqui’s silence.
He was challenged on Twitter to speak out about the political climate in Hyderabad by several citizens.
Earlier yesterday, Munawar Faruqui posted a cryptic message on Twitter about Hyderabad. He tweeted a couplet, “Mehboob e khuda shayad usse maaf bhi kar dete. Lekin khuda ke jalaal se usse khuda hi bachaye.” Following the couplet, a prayer emoji was added with the word ‘Hyd’.
This tweet has further upset his followers and fans who expected a strong response from him. He was criticized by several people from Hyderabad, and many asked that he not return to the City of Nizams. The same couplet was shared by Munawar Faruqui on his official Instagram handle, which also attracted criticism from Hyderabadis.
As those who do not know, Munawar Faruqui successfully carried out the show in Hyderabad despite several attempts by Telangana’s BJP groups to foil it. Immediately afterward, BJP MLA Raja Singh posted a ‘comic’ video on the Jai Shree Ram Channel Telangana’s YouTube channel (hacked now) in which he derogatorily referred to Muslims and Prophet Muhammad. As a retaliatory measure to Munawar Faruqui, who allegedly hurt Hindu sentiment, the video was made.
Raja Singh has demanded to be arrested ever since protests began in the city. The tension in the city escalated when Raja Singh was arrested and got bail on August 23. As a result of massive protests yesterday, Raja Singh was once again arrested as a result of the Preventative Detention (PD) Act.
