Muslim Leaders Excluded from State Cabinet: Amjed Ullah Khan Raises Concerns

Amjed Ullah Khan, the spokesman for Majlis Bachao Tahreek, has expressed significant concerns about the exclusion of Muslim leaders from key positions within the State Cabinet and other governmental roles. In a recent letter addressed to Rahul Gandhi, the chief of the Indian National Congress (INC), Khan highlighted what he perceives as the Congress government’s failure to meet the expectations of the Muslim community.

Khan criticized the Congress government for not addressing the concerns of Muslims, claiming that the current administration is operating similarly to the BJP government, despite the substantial support the Congress received from Muslims in both Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. This support was given with the anticipation that the Congress would enact meaningful changes, especially after the community’s decision to distance itself from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) due to its increasing alignment with the BJP.

Since the Congress assumed power in December 2023, Khan noted a notable absence of representation for Muslims. According to his letter, the Congress government has failed to appoint any Muslim ministers, MPs in either the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha, MLAs, or MLCs in the past eight months. This lack of representation extends to nominated posts as well, where the Muslim community has seen minimal involvement.

Khan also pointed out that several key minority institutions, such as the Wakf Board, Urdu Academy, Haj Committee, and Minorities Finance Corporation, which traditionally have Muslim chairpersons, have not been adequately represented. Of the more than 50 corporations, only one Muslim has been appointed as Chairman of the Food & Civil Supplies Corporation, while another has been given a relatively insignificant role in libraries. Additionally, Khan criticized the Congress for failing to fulfill promises made to the Muslim community, including the commitment to increase the minority welfare budget to Rs 4,000 crore and implement a dedicated minorities sub-plan, as outlined in the Minority Declaration.

The concerns raised by Majlis Bachao Tahreek reflect growing discontent among the Muslim community regarding their representation and the implementation of promised policies under the current Congress government.
