New evaluation system for BTech students introduced by JNTU Hyderabad

With effect from the academic year 2022-23, the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) Hyderabad has introduced new regulations (R22) for undergraduate engineering courses, including the enhancement of Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) marks.

Each subject or course, practical, and project will be evaluated for 100 marks, with 40 marks allotted for the CIE and 60 marks allotted for the Semester End-Examination (SEE). Previously, the CIE received 25 marks for theory and practical subjects, while the SEE received 75 marks.

Students will have two mid-term examinations as part of the CIE for theory subjects, each consisting of part-A (objective/quiz paper) for 10 marks and part-B (descriptive paper) for 15 marks. Students must obtain 35%, i.e., nine marks out of 25 marks from an average of two mid-term exams.

Along with assignments for five marks, the mid-term examinations now include a new assessment in the form of a viva-voce, power-point presentation, poster presentation, or case study on a topic in the subject concerned for ten marks.

There are also changes to the SEE’s marking system for theory subjects. The SEE is worth 60 marks and is divided into two parts: part A (10 marks) and part B (50 marks). Part A consists of ten compulsory sub questions from all units worth equal marks, while Part B consists of five questions worth ten marks each.

The university has decided to assess students only with mid-term examinations, which will be conducted for 50 marks, for some courses in the first-year first semester and for real-time or field-based research project courses in the second-year second semester. This means there will be no external assessment.

In the case of practical subjects, viva-voce or tutorial or case study or application or poster presentation, internal practical exam, and laboratory project each receive 10 marks out of 40 marks for internal evaluation.

Similarly, 60 marks in the SEE are divided as follows: 10 marks for a write-up, 15 marks for an experiment, 15 marks for evaluation of results, 10 marks for presentation, and 10 marks for viva-voce.

Real-time research projects and industry-oriented mini-projects have also been included in the university’s second and third-year undergraduate programs, respectively. Meanwhile, on Friday and Saturday, the university will hold the final ceremony of its golden jubilee celebrations on its campus.
