Hyderabad’s old city, once vibrant with night-time activity around Charminar, now sees a stark decline in visitors after 10 pm due to stringent police actions forcing businesses to shut early. The crackdown, a response to recent incidents of violence and a push for safety, has left locals and tourists alike hesitant to venture out late.
Syed Jameel, a local businessman, reminisces about bustling Charminar streets filled with visitors until late hours just a month ago. Now, he laments the overzealous police measures, overshadowing government efforts to promote night tourism in the area.
The grim visuals of public violence and police crackdown on innocent bystanders have created a climate of fear and uncertainty among the public. “The perception of night restrictions in the old city is keeping people away, hurting local businesses,” complains Mohiuddin, a trader affected by the early closure mandates.

Previously, shops around Charminar stayed open until midnight, attracting youngsters and couples despite police presence. Now, even celebrations like birthdays have dwindled past 11:30 pm, leaving Nooruddin, a hotel manager, perplexed about the city’s messaging to visitors.
Social activists express concern that the old city’s reputation, once improving from past communal tensions, is now regressing due to stringent policing. Mohd Akram, a local social worker, notes the shift from comfort in the old city to a perceived “no-visit” zone under current restrictions.
A senior police official defends the crackdown as necessary for citizen safety, citing recent incidents targeting innocents over minor disputes. “Our priority is to maintain peace and prevent crimes, urging people to stay indoors post-midnight,” states the official from Hyderabad’s south zone.
As debates over safety versus tourism promotion continue, Hyderabad’s nightlife faces a challenging phase with uncertain prospects for its famed old city allure after dark.
