Normal life brought to standstill as Hyderabad gets hit by unseasonal torrential rain

Unseasonal torrential rains and gusty winds lashed Hyderabad on Tuesday night and early Wednesday, bringing normal life to a standstill. An eight-year-old girl lost her life when a wall collapsed at Jubilee Hills during Tuesday’s heavy downpour, which lasted all night and into the morning, causing chaos throughout the city. The worst-affected areas were in the city’s west and north, where residents reported unscheduled power outages, tree uprooting, and flooding.

According to police, the eight-year-old girl Jevanika was sleeping in her house when stones from the railings of an adjacent building fell on the family’s asbestos roofed house. The asbestos sheets broke, and the stones fell on the child, killing her. The police arrived on the scene and transferred the body to the Gandhi Hospital mortuary.

Residents flooded social media with complaints pleading with electricity board officials to restore power. Traffic flow was disrupted by tree falls and minor flooding in some areas. Waterlogged areas included Ameerpet, SR Nagar, Karkhana, Sainikpuri, and Nanakramguda in the early hours of Wednesday due to clogged drains. To clear the uprooted trees, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) dispatched Disaster Response Force teams.

The boat service on Hussain Sagar Lake was halted after strong winds pushed the boats transporting passengers towards People Plaza. Due to high winds, the tourist boat went adrift while attempting to reach the jetty. Smaller boats towed it back to safety, and all passengers were safely de-boarded.

The situation was similar in many other districts. Massive rains lashed the entire state of Telangana, including the districts of Mahabubnagar, Gadwal, Rangareddy, Narayanpet, and Nagarkurnool.

However, the sun came out on Wednesday, bringing much-needed relief to Hyderabad. The city began to recover from the effects of the rains, with most areas regaining power. Officials from the GHMC continued to work to repair the damage caused by the rains.

Residents were advised to take the necessary precautions and to remain vigilant in the event of additional rainfall. More rain is expected in the coming days, according to the Met Department, so people should be prepared.
