In the wake of recent food inspections that exposed poor hygiene, cleanliness issues, and expired food products in restaurant kitchens across the city and state, the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) Hyderabad chapter has announced the development of a hygiene rating system for restaurants.
A special 15-member food safety task force, chaired by NRAI Hyderabad head Sampath Tummala, has been formed to create the rating system and ensure the implementation of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) standards. The task force aims to enhance food safety protocols through a series of initiatives.
The task force will implement a hygiene audit program for restaurants, conducted by third-party auditors to maintain and monitor food quality standards. Additionally, multiple FSSAI awareness workshops and training sessions will be organized to educate restaurant members on essential food safety protocols. The first of these training sessions was held on Thursday.
In partnership with the FSSAI and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the task force plans to organize a food safety week and medical camps in the coming weeks. These camps will aim to provide food handlers with the necessary certification.

“As a responsible body, we have constituted this special task force to prioritize enhancing awareness and knowledge about food safety protocols among all food and beverage operators,” stated Sampath Tummala.
The NRAI task force recently met with Telangana State Food Safety Commissioner RV Karnan to discuss their collaborative efforts. During the meeting, Commissioner Karnan suggested the introduction of hygiene ratings for restaurants, which would be displayed to inform customers. Both parties agreed to host a significant event in the coming months to further raise awareness of food safety requirements.
This initiative underscores the NRAI Hyderabad chapter’s commitment to improving food hygiene and safety standards in the city, ensuring a safer dining experience for all customers.
