Osmania University incorporates artificial intelligence to track attendance

Technology adoption has become widespread, and innovations in the field have redefined even the most basic daily activities at work. The daily marking of attendance is also changing as a result of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).

Now, by leveraging technology, Osmania University intends to make the signing of registers or biometric attendance obsolete by implementing AI and ML. All university employees working out of the administrative building have to do is walk in, and their attendance is automatically recorded.

The university has implemented CCTV-based attendance, which includes cameras that are integrated with AI and ML technologies and capture employees’ attendance as well as log in and out times as they walk in or out of the building entrance.

The attendance is marked using a facial recognition system built into the cameras, which recognizes facial biometrics and syncs with the existing database to record attendance.

The new initiative has been implemented on a trial basis for employees of the university’s main administrative building, and the varsity plans to expand it to its other offices, colleges, and hostels on campus.

In addition to manual registers, the university is currently using facial recognition devices to register attendance.

“In the present system, an employee can mark attendance in the morning and leave the office, and come back to record log out time. This will not be the case with CCTV camera based attendance, as they continuously capture movement besides holding employees log details. We have incorporated AI and ML into two cameras,” an official said.

Furthermore, the CCTV cameras, according to the official, aid in determining how many times a visitor has visited the administrative building. “Log details of all visitors are recorded in the database,” the official added.
