Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Parvesh Verma is emerging as the strongest contender for the Chief Minister’s post in Delhi, following his major electoral victory against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi Assembly constituency. According to reports, Verma, the party’s prominent Jat face in the capital, has the backing of both the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and BJP leadership.
Verma’s name is being considered not just for his electoral triumph but also for his stature within the Jat community, which has been seeking greater representation in the party. The BJP leadership believes appointing him as CM will help strengthen the party’s position among Jat voters, not just in Delhi but also in neighboring states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
Unnamed sources quoted by ABP News revealed that Verma has received approval from the RSS, reinforcing his chances of taking the top post. His post-election meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah has further fueled speculations. Reports suggest that BJP’s decision to field Verma against Kejriwal was a strategic one, demonstrating the party’s trust in his leadership.

Meanwhile, BJP National President J.P. Nadda and Amit Shah have held discussions regarding the CM selection process. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also deliberated with party leaders at the BJP headquarters to finalize the decision.
While Verma is being seen as the front-runner, the BJP may also consider other candidates in line with its recent trend of selecting lesser-known figures for key leadership roles, as seen in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Some party members believe that the BJP could appoint someone like Kapil Mishra as the Deputy Chief Minister. Mishra, from the Brahmin community, could help the party consolidate support among Brahmin and Poorvanchali voters in Delhi.
Additionally, names of women legislators such as Rekha Gupta and Shikha Rai are also being floated as potential choices for the top position. Laxmi Nagar MLA Abhay Verma, a Purvanchali leader, is reportedly under consideration as well.
The final announcement regarding Delhi’s next Chief Minister is expected only after Prime Minister Modi returns from his ongoing visit to the United States. Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva has sought time to meet Lieutenant Governor (L-G) V.K. Saxena but has not met him yet. A meeting is expected in the next one or two days to finalize the leadership transition in the capital. As the anticipation builds, all eyes remain on the BJP’s final decision, which is likely to have a significant impact on Delhi’s political landscape in the coming years.
