Police Charge Haryana Farmers’ Union Chief and 300 Others for Damaging Public Property During Protests

The Haryana Police department on Friday charged Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) chief Gurnam Singh Charuni and 300 unknown individuals for harming open public property and abusing prohibitory rules, one day after farmers conflicted with the police during a protest in Kurukshetra.

Several farmworkers and arhtiyas, who are the middlemen, unions protested against opposing three agricultural directives of the Central government at Pipli close to Haryana’s Kurukshetra. Individuals from the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) and other farm bodies had obstructed a national highway interstate in Kurukshetra’s Pipli and conflicted with the police while pretesting three Union government legislations, which they declared were a bunch of anti-farmers.

Police had shifted to a lathi-charge when farmers originating from the Shahbad zone shoved their way to the rally site. The angry farmers smashed open windowpanes of a fire truck vehicle and threw stones at the police.

Three separate FIRs were filed at the Sadar police headquarters in Thanesar.

SHO Naresh Kumar said: These FIRs have been filed against Gurnam Singh Charuni and a few unidentified individuals for a forbidden assembly, making harm to public property and keeping government workers from performing out their duty.

The FIRs additionally incorporate charges for the infringement of the Disaster Management Act and National Highway Act, he stated.

In the interim, the Shahbad Markanda police filed cases against 300 unknown individuals.

Farmworkers in Haryana are requesting a rollback of the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance; and Farm Services Ordinance; and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Ordinance; and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Ordinance; and Farmers’ Produce Trade, placed into force by the Centre.
