Potential BJP-BRS Alliance in LS poll

In the wake of the recent Telangana Assembly elections, political dynamics have taken a surprising turn, adhering to the age-old adage that “politics makes strange bedfellows” and embracing the notion that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” The Congress emerged victorious in Telangana, shifting the political landscape and prompting potential realignments.

The BJP, unable to establish itself as the sole alternative to the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Telangana, and the BRS, facing a significant decline in its minority voter base outside of Hyderabad, are now contemplating a pre-poll alliance ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The BRS, having analyzed its loss of the Muslim vote bank, sees potential benefits in aligning with the BJP, anticipating the National Democratic Alliance’s return to power at the Centre.

The BRS, particularly in regions beyond Hyderabad, witnessed a decline in minority support, which may not have a substantial impact in Parliament. Nevertheless, the party is strategizing to counter the potential prowl by the Congress, expecting defections as Chief Minister Anumula Revanth Reddy is perceived to be on a witch hunt against BRS leaders. To prevent a fragmentation of the party and retain its members, the BRS is exploring the possibility of joining the NDA alliance with the BJP.

Despite resistance from the BJP state unit, the party’s high command is grappling with the decision of when to admit the BRS into the alliance—whether it should be done before or after the General Election. The looming question for the BJP brass is where the BRS stands in the electoral landscape dominated by the Congress and the BJP.

Drawing lessons from Karnataka, where the JD(S) and BJP, by contesting separately, failed to secure power, a similar scenario is anticipated in Telangana. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy acknowledged the potential for a joint contest between the BJP and BRS to prevent vote splitting, emphasizing that a direct alliance would favor the Congress.

While he downplayed talks of BRS leaders being in touch with the BJP, Revanth acknowledged the possibility of an alliance between the two parties. The intricacies of timing and strategic considerations weigh heavily on the minds of the BJP leadership in navigating this evolving political landscape in Telangana.
