The Allahabad High Court has expressed serious concerns over the worsening traffic congestion in Prayagraj due to the ongoing Mahakumbh, emphasizing that the disruption is now impacting judicial proceedings. The court directed the authorities to ensure smooth movement of lawyers, stating that traffic restrictions should not hinder the functioning of the judiciary.
In its remarks, the bench observed, “While this Court understands that this is an unusual situation because of the presence of a large population visiting the Mahakumbh, it is the duty of the police to ensure that movement of learned counsel to the court is unhindered and does not affect the functioning of the Court,” Bar and Bench reported. The court was forced to adjourn multiple cases due to lawyers being unable to reach on time amid the massive traffic snarls.
Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government has imposed strict traffic curbs in Prayagraj for the next two days in view of the large crowds expected to take a holy dip on Maghi Poornima. According to the district administration, only essential and emergency vehicles will be permitted, while general vehicular movement will remain restricted.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has lashed out at the Yogi Adityanath-led government over the chaotic traffic situation. He pointed out that poor planning has resulted in a 300-km-long traffic jam over the weekend, making travel to Prayagraj a nightmare for devotees.
“Due to poor traffic management, not only are pilgrims suffering, but even essential goods and supplies have not reached Prayagraj,” Yadav alleged, holding the state government responsible for the inconvenience caused to lakhs of visitors.
The Mahakumbh, a once-in-12-years religious gathering, has drawn millions of devotees, placing a tremendous burden on Prayagraj’s infrastructure. The traffic crisis has raised questions about the adequacy of government planning and preparedness for handling such a massive influx of pilgrims. With key snan dates still ahead, authorities remain on high alert, but whether these measures will ease the congestion remains to be seen.
