A property tax collection engine at the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is raking in income at an unprecedented rate, raking in nearly Rs. 1,000 crores in the last four months.

Taxes were mostly paid online this year by property owners. A total of 6,11,839 property owners paid tax online out of the 9,64,105 assessments, while 1,02,639 was paid at Mee Seva. The GHMC Citizen Service Centers took money from 1,45,179 people while bill collectors took money from 1,04,448 people.

Among all tax circles, Serilingampally collected the most money (Rs.132.77 crore). Jubilee Hills collected Rs.105.12 crore, while Khairatabad collected Rs.81.14 crore. Property Tax Early Bird Scheme, which offers a 5 percent property tax rebate, contributed to collect the largest portion of property tax in April, i.e., Rs.741.35 crore.

Similarly, under the One-Time Scheme (OTS) launched in mid-July and presently underway, Rs.16.09 crore has been collected through 10,357 assessments and this is part of the overall Rs.997.50 crore revenue generated over the last few months.

The state government has waived 90 percent of property tax interest under the OTS in order to help those who owe their property taxes in arrears. It will be necessary for the taxpayer to settle the principal amount of the tax dues, along with 10 percent accumulated interest, in one go by 2021-22.

Property owners who owe arrears are being approached by GHMC bill collectors before the scheme closes on October 31. According to an official at the GHMC, the department is also sending them text messages and calling them.
