Protest breaks out over Agnipath scheme at Osmania University

The Osmania University (OU) students protested in front of the NCC gate on Saturday afternoon, demanding the cancellation of the centre’s Agnipath scheme.

In front of the university gate, around 30 students from Vidyarthi Jana Samithi and Yuva Jana Samithi raised slogans against Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Additionally, protesters attempted to burn effigies but were detained and taken to the Nallakunta Police Station.

Sayyed Saleem Pasha, the president of YJS who is a student of law at OU, told Siasat.com, “We are disappointed with the scheme’s length of service and lack of pension arrangements for early discharges. The previous recruitment strategy should be reinstated. It is untrue that the new scheme was announced after extensive consultation.”

“The government wants to privatize the army and the administration wants to save money, so pensions aren’t being granted,” he said.

In anticipation of violent protests against the Agnipath scheme, police officers have been stationed around the university campus.
