Protests Escalate in Telangana Assembly

Tensions escalated near the Telangana Assembly building as members of the Congress party attempted to lay siege, seeking compensation for flood victims. The demonstrators, who were waving placards and chanting slogans, were halted by police, arrested, and transferred to a local police station.

The Congress workers demanded that the state government compensate the families of those who died in the recent floods with Rs 50 lakh. They also sought Rs 20 lakh in compensation for those whose homes were damaged during the disaster. More than 40 persons were killed as a result of heavy rainfall and floods in north Telangana.

This was the second day of protests in a row, following a rally by Youth Congress workers the day before, asking that the government fill vacancies in all departments and fulfill its pledge to provide allowances to the unemployed.

Aside from the Congress workers’ protest, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) attempted to lay siege to the Assembly headquarters, demanding that their services be regularized. For the previous 16 years, ANMs have worked on a contract basis. Police arrested ANMs in several parts of the state, including the whole Nalgonda district.
