Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh raked in a brand new debate over Hindus celebrating the advent of New Year on December 31 night and called those celebrating it as “misguiding people”.
Raja Singh stated in a video that on December 31, people in all states of India celebrate New Year every day unmindful of the fact that it is not Indian culture but ‘western’ culture.
“It is a culture of the people who ruled India for 200 years. At the stroke of 12 midnight on December 31, people get madly into the celebrations as if they are possessed by evil spirits. Our New Year begins on Ugadi,” he said.
Raja Singh went on to criticize the large-scale celebrations and urged the youth to join hands to put an end to this western practice.
“If we start awareness about it, we can stop the bad practice,” he said addressing the youth.

Police to step up drunk driving checks
The traffic police in the tri-Commissionerates are preparing to conduct increased checks for drunk driving on New Year’s Eve across all accident-prone stretches in Hyderabad.
Stretches where incidents involving drunken driving, including fatal accidents, have already been identified. The commercial stretches with a higher density of bars, pubs, and recreational spaces serving liquor will be on the radar of traffic cops.
Teams led by traffic police inspectors will barricade such vulnerable road stretches and conduct checks armed with breath analyzers.
“Compared to previous years, we have more number of women traffic constables. All of them will be deployed to conduct checking on women drivers. Our presence on the city roads will be in full strength on New Year’s Eve,” a senior official from Hyderabad traffic police, said.
The traffic police in Hyderabad is committed to preventing road accidents, and as part of this effort, Necklace Road and all of the city’s flyovers, including the PVNR Expressway, are likely to be closed to motorists.
“Cases will be booked against any person found driving vehicles in an intoxicated condition and will be produced before the Court. Similar cases will be booked for rash driving and performing stunts on bikes etc.,” the official said.
The officials maintained that the offenders would face a slew of punitive measures, including a Rs 10,000 fine or up to six months in prison, as well as a three-month or permanent suspension of their driver’s license. Minors should not drive vehicles, and if they are caught, the vehicle owners will be held accountable, officials said.
