Raja Singh’s arrest: How the Hyderabad police planned it

In response to the failing attempt by the Hyderabad police on Tuesday to jail MLA Raja Singh, a team of higher officials considered all options for dealing with Singh.

There have been 101 criminal charges filed against Singh, 18 of which are communal crimes. A detailed analysis was conducted by the police to determine whether the PD Act could be invoked to prevent his arrest without having to appear in court.

The committee is comprised of legal officers that hear the arguments for the PD Act proposal and invokes it on anyone seen as a threat to law and order in any state.” According to a police official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the PD Act would be invoked against any person considered a threat to law and order.

In response to Raja Singh’s first statement against the Munawar Faruqui show, the police began closely monitoring him. As his rhetoric took an ugly turn, the police began gathering information about his previous cases and activities. He allegedly made derogatory comments about Prophet Muhammad in a video released on August 22, and the police decided enough was enough. Raja Singh was arrested the next morning after they booked cases in different police stations to maintain Hyderabad as a ‘communal riot-free state’.

Despite this, he was released on conditional bail by the court on Tuesday itself. As a result, the Muslim community took their protest to the streets for two days and nights, causing tension. Motorcycle rallies and effigy burnings were held along with protests, stone-pelting, and effigy burnings.

At the height of the crisis, chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao called a high-level meeting and ordered the police to initiate tough actions. As a super available alternative, high police officials explored all options during an internal meeting.

A strategy was devised to confuse the MLA and his associates. Three 41A CrPC notices were issued to the MLA on Thursday at his office in connection with three hate speech criminal cases at Mangalhath and Shahinayathgunj police stations. It is assumed by some lawmakers that in some cases, the police will arrest him and he can easily obtain bail.

In the Mangalhath case, the police had also appealed against the bail granted to the MLA for making alleged derogatory comments against Prophet Mohammed.

Even though the PD Act proposal was prepared, the MLA had no idea what it was about. At approximately 3 pm, 100 police officers arrived at his house and arrested him. “On the order of the court, the MLA was shifted to Central Prison at Cherlapally,” said the cop.

A high court petition would likely have been the next move for the MLA’s legal team to get the PD Act quashed and he released. Since 2004, Singh has been charged with 101 cases, 18 of which are for hate speech and communal rioting. If three grave cases occur within a six-month period, the PD Act may be invoked.

According to intelligence agencies, protests and disturbances are expected after the MLA posted a video making derogatory remarks about Prophet Mohammed, the Muslim community, and Munawar Farooqui. The video was uploaded to the Sree Ram Channel on YouTube. During Munawar Faruqui’s stand-up comedy show held at Shilpa Kalavedika Madhapur on Saturday, he termed it ‘tit for tat.
