Raja Singh’s Lawyer allegedly attacked in Nampally

In the hours following Raja Singh’s arrest under the PD Act (Preventive Detention Act), his lawyer, Karuna Sagar Kashimshetty, was allegedly attacked by a fanatic outside the state high court.

In the middle of addressing the media outside, gate 4, a fanatic approached me and yelled incoherent things. He was stopped by people around him.

“We requested the police to take action, but they did not,” said the lawyer.

According to Kashimshetty’s recent tweets, he has also been receiving death threats via telephone. “A few people called, they said things like ‘You have taken up Raja Singh’s case, we will kill you.” In response, he tweeted that he was doing his job and that threats would not deter him.

Police in Shahinayatgunj and Mangalhaat has issued notices on hate-speech-related cases booked against the now suspended BJP MLA in April two days after he was granted bail.

A notice was served on him in accordance with Section 41 of the CrPC (to be given before he is arrested). A case was filed against the MLA on August 22 charging him with making derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad. He was later released on bail.

BJP MLA T Raja Singh’s lawyer Karuna Sagar approached the Saidabad police recently, alleging he received threatening calls from unidentified individuals regarding a hate speech case booked by Mangalhat police against him.

A written complaint filed on Wednesday alleges that since taking up the case defending the MLA, Karuna Sagar received at least three threatening calls, including from foreign numbers.

“They abused me and threatened to kill me because I defended the case and secured bail for the MLA,” he said. As a result, Karuna Sagar requested the police to provide him with security and take necessary action.
