The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Hyderabad issued a red signal for Telangana on Friday, predicting extensive rainfall over the next 24 hours. During this time, the city of Hyderabad is expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, with an orange warning issued expressly for the city.
The forecast is due to a low-pressure system over South Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh coasts, along the West Central Bay of Bengal, and its associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 kilometers above mean sea level, according to Dr. K Nagaratna, Director of Hyderabad Meteorological Centre. An Upper-Air system over North Chhattisgarh and an East-West Windshear zone about 20 degrees north latitude are also impacting weather patterns.
As a result, widespread rainfall is forecast over Telangana, with light to moderate showers in several districts and heavy rains in a few locations, with rainfall ranging from 7 to 12 centimeters, and potentially surpassing 12 centimeters in one or two areas in the northern districts. Rainfall in Adilabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Komaram Bheem, and Mancherial is expected to range from 12 to 20 centimeters, with some areas receiving more over 20 centimeters. Likewise, Jagtial, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, and their neighboring districts can expect significant to very heavy rainfall, as well as mild to moderate rainfall in several regions.
In addition to the red notice for Telangana, the IMD issued a red alert for severe to very heavy rainfall in Palghar district on Saturday, as well as an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts in Maharashtra.
