RGV criticizes no music after 10 p.m. order in Hyderabad

Famous filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma recently criticized the no music after 10 p.m. order in Hyderabad pubs, asking “if the city was under Taliban rule.”

In a series of tweets with the hashtag #HyderabadTaliban on Thursday, he urged the Telangana government and city police to lift the restriction, warning that if it remained, it would drive investors away to cities such as Bengaluru.

“When we are all living in the same country called India, why are only Hyderabadis being subjected to Taliban rule sir? How come the NO music time is 1 AM everywhere else in the country and 10 pm in Hyderabad,” he asked Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

“I didn’t realize that Hyderabad is being ruled in Taliban style which is what I felt when I saw a pub looking like a graveyard thanks to the no music after 10 p.m. order,” wrote RGV, as the eminent director is popularly known.

The film director believes that the no-music after 10 p.m. rule is as barbaric as the decision prevents young people from having fun.

“Please understand that by the time one comes back home from work, gets freshened up, dresses up and drives back to reach a pub, it will be nearly 10 pm and then no music?” he asked.

While issuing directions to the police, Justice Lalitha Kanneganti stated on September 30 that if the police enforced the time limit rule, all pubs in the city would have to go silent by 10 p.m.

The term “night time” refers to the period between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., as defined by the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000 under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 (central government legislation).

Following the High Court’s September 13 order, police began a drive on pubs on September 30 to ensure that they comply with the orders to stop music by 10 p.m. The police clarified that pubs cannot claim exemption on the grounds that they are not situated in any residential locality.
