Rising Pulse Prices in Hyderabad: Concerns over Staple Diet Affordability

Pulse prices in Hyderabad have progressively risen, prompting alarm among people who rely significantly on it as a staple diet. While the drop in edible oil prices gave some relief, the growing cost of pulses has more than outweighed the benefit.

Toor dal, a favourite pulse, has suffered a major price increase in recent months. It was previously offered for Rs 95-110 per kg, but is currently marketed for Rs 130-150 per kg. Masoor dal prices have also risen to far above Rs 100 per kg, up from Rs 70 per kg a month earlier. The price of whole urad dal has risen to Rs 130 per kg.

Even online platforms have seen price increases, with toor dal now costing Rs 137-160 per kg and the organic variation costing Rs 200-250 per kg. This price increase, notably for toor dal, has added to the strain on consumers who are already battling with inflation.

Traders blame the high prices to reduced pulse production this year. Reduced pulse output has been caused by unfavourable meteorological circumstances, including exceptional rains, as well as many farmers choosing crops other than pulses. This mismatch between supply and demand has contributed to price increases.

Traders estimate that pulse prices would rise further, with toor dal potentially reaching Rs 200 per kg. This circumstance presents a dilemma for consumers who are already feeling the effects of increased food prices.
